MacNeil Of Colonsay Modern Light Weight Tartan. Donald MacNeil of Crerar, son of John Og MacNeil, descendant of Torquil MacNeil of Taynish, was the founder of this family. He exchanged the lands of Crerar with the Duke of Argyll for Colonsay and Oronsay in the 18th century. The 6th MacNeil, sold Colonsay to his brother, Duncan, in 1846. Duncan MacNeil, who was Lord Justice General, was created Lord Colonsay in 1867 and had a distinguished career. He was succeeded by his nephew, maj. -General Sir John C. MacNeil of Gigha, on whose death, in 1904, Colonsay was sold.
