Middleton Modern Light Weight Tartan. Middleton of Conveth, in the Parish of Laurencekirk, is the source of this name. Malcolm Middleton received a charter of the lands of Middleton from King William the Lion of Scotland. In 1660 a peerage was conferred on John Middleton of Caldhame as 1st Earl of Middleton and Lord Clermont and Fettercairn. He was a brave and capable soldier, and for his services in defeating Montrose he was awarded 25, 000 merks. His son, the 2nd Earl, was one of the principal Secretaries of State for Scotland in 1682. He was loyal to King James II and followed him to France. He was outlawed in 1694 and forfeited in 1695.
