The existing provinces of Ireland can be traced back to kingdoms in the fifth century ruled by "Ri Coicid" or Kings of a Fifth, indicating that there were originally five kingdoms or provinces, Connaucht, Leinster, Meath, Munster and Ulster.
Eventually the five became four covering the principal religious spheres of influence, with Meath being absorbed by Leinster.
Connaucht can claim to be the home of the first acknowledged High King of All Ireland "Maelsachnaill". Having descended from the old rulers of Connaucht, the Ui Neill name was given to the descendants of a warrior of the early 5th century who's exploits earned the surname that translates to "the nine hostages".
Also in Connaucht is the mountain "Croagh Patrick" south of Westport in County Mayo. It is claimed to be where St. Patrick spent part of his early captive life, and to where he returned to spend 40 days praying for the conversion of the Pagans.

This is an Irish Tartan.
