Mowat Modern Light Weight Tartan. Believed to be of Norman origin the Mowats settled in Scotland in the 12th century. They acquired lands of Ferne, in Angus, during the reign of King William the Lion and rose to high positions. Some of the name are found in the Highlands and in Orkney and Shetland. Mowat of Buchally, in Aberdeenshire, received a charter of Freswick in Caithness from Robert the Bruce in 1312. This family, or people of the name, were found in many parts of Scotland, including the Lothians, Ayrshire, and Cromarty. The northern Mowats appear to have been septs of Clan Sutherland.
